Seven of the twelve HOTBINs were delivered to Waldringfield primary school last week and unpacked with great enthusiasm by the children at the start of Waldringfield Community Composting (WCC) initiative. Tony Callaghan, inventor of the HOTBIN, will be visiting them tomorrow to kick off the project.
This community, through individual action, are keen to reduce their carbon footprint and adapt to climate change at the same time as saving themselves money by recognising food waste as a resource, not a problem.
“Being able to deal with your food waste and garden waste together makes composting so much easier. The aim of this scheme is to enable Waldringfield to reach and exceed the SCC target of 40% of households home composting all their garden waste by 2020 well ahead of schedule. The HOTBIN composting dozen will help us achieve this”, reports Betsy Reid, Master Composter and part of the WCC steering Group.

I’ve been using this composting meothd for a few years now and it works well. Be careful using wood preservatives however. Particularly if you plan on using the finished compost in a vegetable garden. Try preserving with citrus oil. My first boxes I built were with treated wood that rotted away anyway within a few years.
